Monica Magnani´s Florence

When someone mentions «Florence», it prompts me to run away. I sometimes think of the city as a cliché for tourists: to cruise travellers, as a two-hour tour; to clandestine lovers, just as a weekend; to families, it means seeing museums during the Easter holidays; to school trips, it is a chapter on the Renaissance; and to melancholic souls, Florence is the longing for Stendhal’s syndrome. I always want to escape from this Florence, although I later learn to love it. When I manage to leave those common places, I then feel a pleasant nostalgia for the city. Indeed, for those who want to flee from it, Florence offers many escape routes. For the purpose, one needs means of transportation or just a pair of comfortable shoes.

One could go to the Mugello, either to visit the Medici villas, for a long walk to the hilltops or to enjoy some tortelli di patate with excellent wine in an osteria. It is also possible to pause at Via Bolognese and discover the park of Villa Demidoff. Another option is exploring the valley of Sieve, tracing the beautiful Romanesque churches in the old Via dei Sette Ponti, on the way to Arezzo.

But I also relish observing Florence from the terraces of the magnificent hotels of the historic centre with a glass of Prosecco. As spring blossoms, just half an hour away from the old town, I love stopping at the Giardino dell’Orticoltura with a good book, especially close to the Ottocento‘s greenhouse. There is also a great view of Florence from the wall of Via Trento. The shop windows of Via Tornabuoni are for the rich. Whereas those of Via Calzaiuoli, for people who tend to lack imagination. Preferably, I escape to Borgo Pinti, to Mrs Macis. At night, the best spaghettini al pomodoro is cooked at I Fratelli Briganti. And as I return from the sea, I am always moved by the shining lights spotted in the distance, right at the end of the highway.

Yo prefiero huir a Borgo Pinti, a Mrs Macis.
