I am here a few months per year to please my voracious curiosity, searching meanwhile for some luck. The coexistence of different historic periods gives Florence a certain air of timelessness. Thus, I walk through these foreign streets as if my ancestors had left their trail in establishments and sidewalks; as if this is the home to which one always wishes to return. To my astonishment, I have discovered I feel at home in Florence. I especially sensed it through the intense joy, or rather euphoria, felt at the time of arrival. Also through the sadness, almost depression, lived at the moment of departure. Next comes the longing for the piercing song of the starlings and the tolling of the bells, as opposite to the exhausting sirens of police, ambulances and the squeaking rattle of the Berlin tram.
Hogares que no son tu hogar y que sin embargo sí lo son
Busco mi suerte aquí durante unos pocos meses al año porque mi curiosidad de momento es insaciable. La coexistencia de diferentes épocas le da, de alguna manera, a Florencia un aire de vaga atemporalidad. Camino por estas calles extranjeras como si mis antepasados hubieran dejado su rastro en sus establecimientos y aceras. Como si este fuera el hogar al que uno siempre quiere volver. Mi mayor sorpresa ha sido descubrir que aquí me siento como en casa. Eso lo vivo sobre todo a través de la intensa alegría, o más bien euforia, que experimento cuando llego a la ciudad. También mediante la tristeza, rayana en la depresión, del momento en que tengo que irme de ella. Largos días escuchando el penetrante canto de los estorninos y el tañido de las campanas —en lugar de las agotadoras sirenas de coches de policía y ambulancias, y el chirriante traqueteo del tranvía de Berlín— me esperan.
