On the Road: a Florentine travel bookstore with added-value

PHOTOS & SPANISH VERSION BELOW

On the Road is not only the title of the Beat Generation best-known novel. It is also a charming bookshop in Florence specialized in travel, the only one of its kind in the city. Opened in 2012, in this bookshop, the continents are classified by colors. “For me, Africa is red and not black – the color that anyone would associate with this continent,” says Martina. Martina owns the business. A bellissima donna italiana, kind, graceful, and refined who is, in fact, a simple woman bursting with life and sweetness. She is a great expert in travel literature and, no need to say, she is passionate about her job. But being a bookseller not only implies selling books: “It is exhausting.” There are many tasks hinter den Kulissen: select books, stay tuned for editorial novelties, accounting, expert advice, and affection. In addition to all these duties, Martina has time to organize book presentations with authors or workshops on photography and travel literature. On the Road not only sells guides but also novels focused on travels, maps, books on hiking and cycling routes, travel literature for children and last but not least, it gives priceless personalized attention.

The gates of Florence

The gates of Florence

PHOTOS & SPANISH VERSION BELOW

The gates of Florence were part of the city´s old defensive border. Sadly, the wall by the northern side of the Arno River was demolished in the 19th century so to pave the way for the main ring road. However, part of the wall located in Oltrarno, at the south side of the Arno, and other gates remain today: Porta San Gallo, Porta San Niccolò, Porta alla Croce, Porta San Frediano, Porta San Giorgio, Porta San Miniato and Porta al Prato. A stroll on a sunny afternoon from Porta San Giorgio to Porta San Miniato — with the ancient wall on one side and the terrific landscape of the Tuscan countryside on the other — is a must; feels like natural Prozac for the senses. …

History of art according to Florence or the Renaissance chapter at high school

PHOTOS & SPANISH VERSION BELOW

History of art was, without a doubt, my favourite subject at high school. By then, Italy was for me a distant and unknown country, it seemed so far as on another planet, and I did not even know what Tuscany meant or where in the map Florence was. At the age of 17, everything seemed so phantasmagorical and unreal … How unusual, the unpredictable ways to which life sometimes leads. Especially to those who try to escape from routine.

Uncommon Museums of Florence #1: Museum of Masonic Symbology

PHOTOS & SPANISH VERSION BELOW

Opened in March 2012, the Museum of Masonic Symbology was founded by Cristiano Franceschini in Florence as a private initiative with the aim to transmit to the brothers the evolution of different Masonic traditions over time. According to Franceschini, the museum is mostly visited by Brazilians, since there is a large number of Freemasons in that country. Moreover, for the broader secular public, the museum wants to make known the Masonic ideology, philosophy and ethics through the representation of symbols, on which these rituals are based. The collection on display includes ritual objects with etched, embroidered, applied, printed or engraved symbols. The first Italian masonic lodge, known as “The Lodge of the English-people” was created 1731 in Florence. The collection presented here comprehends more than ten thousand objects dated from the end of the eighteenth century and coming from around the world: dresses, aprons, belts, bottles, porcelain, pins, ties, stamps, photos, documents, books, glass slides or magic lanterns are part of the lot.

‘OBEY. MAKE ART NOT WAR,’ exhibition at Palazzo Medici-Riccardi in Florence

PHOTOS & SPANISH VERSION BELOW

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the start of his career as a street artist, Shepard Fairey, also known as OBEY, presents at Palazzo Medici-Riccardi in Florence the exhibition ‘OBEY. MAKE ART NOT WAR.’ The show is a visual journey at the crossroads between four themes — Woman, Environment, Peace, Culture — recreating in the museum the ideal night-time stroll through the city. The large artworks and the small silk-screen prints are organic parts of the same family, an urban conversation between militant messages. OBEY encourages reflections on humanitarian themes, existential transitions, social utopias and values above the law. His pacifist and environmental message transforms us into little ‘soldiers’ of a new kind of activism.…

Flâneurism at the Arno River

Flâneurism at the Arno River

PHOTOS & SPANISH VERSION BELOW

Certainly, the Arno is quite photogenic and never disappoints. There´s such pleasure in being dragged by the craving of the camera and by the rays of the sun to the bridges of this river! Populated by crowds courting storks, older gentlemen fishing, young people smoking pot and drinking beer, troops of tourists in pursuit of their next great selfie, Asian couples just married with the Ponte Vecchio in the background … and especially, when the weather is good, canoeists. They embellish the Arno and suit wonderfully in any photograph of the Ponte (or even without it), either during sunset or broad daylight. The camera will always find its reward. Canoeing is a much more complex sport than people think. It involves a lot of physical work, concentration and excellent coordination. Luckily, in the Società Canottieri Firenze they count with excellent and patient instructors.
